Hotter Summers Are Changing Desert Gardens

Record-breaking summer heat is taking a toll on desert landscapes. Plants that once thrived are now struggling with intense sun exposure, reflected heat, and prolonged periods of extreme temperatures.

But there are practical ways to help your garden adapt.

In this virtual 1-hour Zoom workshop, I’ll share simple strategies to help reduce heat stress in your landscape using smarter plant placement, shade techniques, watering practices, and design approaches that help plants survive and thrive during hotter summers.

You’ll also learn how to recognize the toughest heat exposures in your landscape and discover which plants have continued to perform well during recent record-breaking summers.

Noelle Johnson, aka “AZ Plant Lady,” is an author, horticulturist, instructor, and landscape consultant specializing in desert gardening.

She holds a B.S. in Plant Biology/Urban Horticulture from Arizona State University and is the author of The Water-Smart Garden and the award-winning The Dry Climate Garden. Her work has been featured on CNN, HGTV, NPR, PBS, and in Martha Stewart Living, and she is a columnist for Phoenix Home & Garden magazine.

Through her consulting, writing, presentations, and online courses, Noelle has guided tens of thousands of desert homeowners in creating healthier, more resilient landscapes that thrive in hot, dry climates.

Following the record-breaking summers of recent years, she began closely observing which plants successfully handled extreme heat in both her own garden and landscapes across the Southwest. Her goal is simple: to help desert gardeners adapt confidently to our hotter climate while creating beautiful outdoor spaces that can flourish for years to come.
